Birmingham 2022

Birmingham 2022

We’ve always been proud of our portfolio of clients in the sporting sector. From London 2012, Glasgow 2014 through to our work with first class sporting teams such as the Northampton Saints and MK Dons football club. So when we were approached to become a print partner to Birmingham 2022 we were delighted to be involved.

Birmingham 2022 proved to be a spectacular sporting showcase: 877 medals were awarded, 96 Commonwealth Games records and 4 world records were broken.

Hosts Team England sent the most diverse and inclusive English sporting team to compete at Birmingham 2022 and were rewarded with a record 176 medals, including 57 golds, representing the most medals ever won by England at a Commonwealth Games.

After working on a number of previous successful publications with Birmingham 2022, Belmont Press were consulted by the Publications team to help deliver a final flagship publication named ‘Our Story’, in celebration of a successful historical event. ‘Our Story’ complied the entire story of the Games and the legacy beyond. The book needed to reflect the overwhelming success of Birmingham 2022; be of superior quality; and provide longevity to allow readers to reflect on the Games for years to come.

Legacy publication

The 164pp A4 Landscape text pages, filled with exceptional photography, were printed and sealed throughout on 170gsm FSC Silk. Production on our Heidelberg press with inbuilt impress bar technology meant that colour was checked and recalibrated every seven sheets, ensuring colour consistency and accurate reproduction of the photographic images. The outer covers were soft touch matt laminated and had spot gloss UV varnish applied, before being case bound with the text sections.

To protect the publication, Belmont Press created and manufactured a bespoke outer 2mm board slip case at the request of the Birmingham team. To compliment the prestigious nature of the ‘Our Story’ case bound book, the slip case was also soft touch matt laminated and had an additional paper inner lining applied. Die -Cut thumb cuts allowed ease of use when removing the book from the casing.

Upon the successful conclusion of the project, we made fully recyclable cardboard boxes to distribute ‘Our Story’ to countries across the globe. These perfect fit outer boxes prevented movement in transit ensuring the project reached the worldwide recipients in perfect condition. It was an honour and a privilege to play our part once again in such a prestigious and historical occasion, which culminated in this superb keepsake of the Games produced in print for lasting prosperity.

Client testimonial

The Lead Publications and Studio Manager with Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, had this to say about his experience with us:

“Having worked with Belmont Press previously, it was great to have them on board with Birmingham 2022 to support our print requirements for the Commonwealth Games. The flagship publication of the Birmingham 2022 ‘Our Story’ book is the complete journey of the Games - from award to legacy - and Belmont Press were trusted with its production and delivery.

The project was managed by Tim Brown, and his advice and suggestions really made an impact on the look and feel of the book and slipcase. He was always available and on hand to answer any questions and process any requests made from myself. Timelines and production details were always accurately communicated, and I felt confident that Belmont Press would deliver a best-in-class product exactly to the specifications expected.

When my copies arrived, I was delighted with the result and feedback from recipients of the book were positive and very well received. This is a real coffee table publication designed to tell the story of the Games and will be kept as a souvenir and memory by a wide audience from members of the Commonwealth to local schools and libraries.

Thank you, Tim, and thank you Belmont Press, for a fantastic service and a quality book and slip case delivered to exacting standards as usual.”

Liverpool John Moores University

Liverpool John Moore University

Early in 2022 Belmont Press took part in a large and comprehensive print framework tendering opportunity for Liverpool John Moore’s University (LJMU). This incorporated a strong emphasis on supporting the environment and further complimenting the civic commitment held by LJMU which extends throughout its curriculum and supply chain. LJMU is committed to playing a leading role in finding sustainable solutions and adopts suppliers to their supply chain that can further support their aims. LJMU are in the top third of universities in the People and Plant League and are a member of the Universities Climate Network.

The tender process scoring scheme was led with non-price criteria accounting for 70% of the total tender score, allocating Management of the Contract at 45% and Social Value and Carbon Reduction at 25%. The print requirements were split into Lots incorporating flagship publications to wide format projects. The bids from Belmont Press were measured in accordance with the tender requirements and judged to offer the best solutions, instilling confidence that all projects would be delivered, mirroring the University's own ethos.

Social values

Our achieved score highlighted that as a print partner, Belmont Press would prove exceptionally responsive to meet the needs of the University, and consequently, Belmont Press were successful in winning the contracts on all three Lots for which they bid.

The attributes of Belmont Press as a green print supplier are underpinned with a Carbon Reduction Strategy focused upon our ultimate aim of becoming a zero business by 2040.  We employ an independent organisation to measure our scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions using the government recognised PAS2060 methodology. This supports the objectives of LJMU’s policies to decrease their carbon footprint within their own supply chain.

Social Value and Governance good practice is also embedded within the contract. Belmont Press recognise the importance of these elements which encompasses the support of our team members and wider community projects, underpinning the ethos of our business and our value as a print supplier.

Environmentally aware print supplier

One of the first projects under the new contracts for LJMU was for the print production and mailing of the Applicant Handbook. This consisted of 68 pages printed in five colours with an additional aqueous (water based) coater applied to the covers to prevent ink transfer and marking. The Handbook was PUR bound and prepared for mailing to prospective students.

A key element within the specification set by LJMU was the procurement of carbon balanced paper. This was achieved working with the World Land Trust - their Carbon Balanced programme supports action on climate change and biodiversity protection. With the paper purchased using this scheme the LJMU Applicant Handbook bears the World Land Trust Logo.

The reduction of waste and surplus packaging is a key aim within the contract.

What the client says

The Applicant Handbook was then mailed via the most cost effective route to market by our fulfilment team, using a perfect fit recyclable outer wrap. Our client from LJMU had this to say about their experience with the Belmont team: -

"Colour, brand consistency, quality and delivery are all equally important for our brand. All these elements were achieved and not compromised, with some very challenging deliveries met!

All products have been very well received. Belmont has a fantastic accommodating team- exceptional.

I would absolutely not hesitate to recommend them if you are look for competitive costs, quality without compromise and excellent delivery."

Uclan case study

University of Central Lancashire

The University of Central Lancashire is one of the UKs largest universities with staff and student numbers approaching 38,000. UCLan’s student population comes from over 100 countries around the world, creating a truly diverse global community. Belmont Press successfully tendered for the printing of the university's Undergraduate Prospectus 2022, a publication that needed to be of first-class quality. It also needed to reflect the huge changes underway on campus, with the radical £200m transformation of the Preston Campus nearing completion.

The Undergraduate Prospectus is a substantial publication of 256pp, with matt laminate and spot UV varnish applied to the outer covers, with a finished size of 240 x 170mm.

As the flagship publication to showcase the University’s revitalised brand, we first output two fully bound book proofs on our Digital printing press to help the UCLan team visualise their artwork in a finished format.

Prospectus printing

Once the final artwork tweaks were completed, our production team got to work, with all printed text being produced on our Heidelberg B1 lithographic presses that are equipped with impress technology.

“Impress” technology automatically measures and records colour and re-calibrates every seven sheets. This ensures colour consistency throughout the entirety of the print run, maintaining brand consistency and quality of product.

An additional requirement of the contract was to fulfil and mail the publication to prospective students. The UCLan team mirror our own ethos and try to avoid the use of single-use plastics.

With this in mind, we designed a suitably sized environmentally friendly, fully recyclable outer cardboard wrap. Artwork supplied from the University is printed onto the outer wrap and it is die-cut to shape.

Partners

The finished result is an eye-catching prospectus, introducing new students to the University’s exciting ‘We See YOU’ campaign, and produced to the highest quality and environmentally friendly standards. Dan Mills, Publications Officer for UCLan had this to say about the project:

“Belmont have demonstrated excellent customer service throughout. Whenever we had a query and needed some advice, they responded promptly and were always friendly and helpful.

Having a good relationship with our appointed printer is crucial, because the prospectus is a huge project with lots of components and it's essential that when it lands in student's hands it showcases our University as effectively as possible.

Belmont delivered on time to the tight deadline we set them, and every aspect was carried out exceptionally and professionally - from the printing of the prospectus and its packaging to delivery and their ongoing liaison with our mailroom and recruitment teams.

Belmont have exceeded our expectations and we would be very happy to work with them again in the future.”

Scotlands Gardens Scheme

Scotland's Gardens Scheme

Scotland's Gardens Scheme supports over 250 charities each year with the opening of a fantastic selection of gardens across Scotland to the public. Belmont Press have worked with Scotland's Gardens since 2018 producing their flagship publication “Our Guide” to the Open Garden Scheme.

This handy A5 sized book contains details of all the participating gardens over 296 pages, and is packed full of quality horticultural imagery. With the importance of the imagery in mind, Belmont Press produced a full digitally printed and bound sample version prior to starting the main print run. This helped the team at Scotland's Gardens view the guidebook layout and photography.

With all Belmont’s printing presses also being equipped with impress bar technology, Scotlands Gardens felt reassured that the colour consistency of the guide would remain throughout the entire publication. This was achieved with automatic readings and adjustments made after every seven sheets that pass through the press.

Customer service focus

With a regional contact based in the north of England, Belmont Press were also able to respond quickly, delivering proofs in person and attending face-to face meetings to discuss progress and keep Scotlands Gardens abreast of any new innovations that would add value to the project. Our expert team were always on hand via email, telephone or virtual link to help create a quality, fit for purpose publication.

Once printed, folded and PUR bound, a proportion of the completed guidebook needed to be collated with a covering letter and free admission card, then inserted into an environmentally friendly padded envelope and mailed.

All of these services were under taken in house which ensured brand consistency, a quality product and the most cost effective route to market. It also ensured the guidebooks arrived in good time for the opening season. Along side the mailing a total of 23 separate bulk deliveries were made across Scotland and delivered to schedule.

Testimonial

Liz Stewart, National Organiser, had this to say about using Belmont Press as Scotland's Gardens preferred print partner:

“Belmont Press gave excellent customer service for our 2021 book - we had a new team working on the project and due to lockdown, had to work entirely remotely and it was a complex process for our team as a result. Belmont helped us hugely with some technical problem solving and were very supportive throughout. The Belmont team is always very quick to respond to queries and problem solve as required. They also helped us to create a new distribution plan for our book and we made use of the fulfilment service for our direct mailouts. This has made life significantly easier, is cost-effective and something we have carried through into our 2023 book. Although Belmont is not in Scotland (we are based in Edinburgh) and I had wondered whether this might make things more difficult, the reality is that the service has been seamless - complete book proofs have been provided the next day. We have made use of video conferencing on occasion, and have had the opportunity to meet Paul in person on visits to Edinburgh. A great quality finish is important to us to ensure that our heritage and branding shine through. As a reference guide it has lived up to the wear and tear very well and it looks beautiful! We are using Belmont once again again for our 2024 book”.

University of Derby

University of Derby print supplier

The University of Derby is located in the heart of England and is currently home to around 34,000 students. Four campus sites offer over 300 study programmes at undergraduate level.

Derby are the only university in the country to own a professional producing theatre which offers a rare learning experience for students. In addition, the University of Derby campuses boast a variety of specialist facilities including computing laboratories, two computer games development suites, a general practice surgery, recording studios, and concert venues.

Belmont Press have been working as the primary University of Derby print supplier on a number of projects over the years and were delighted to be able to produce their latest Undergraduate Prospectus.

Specialist finishes

Given the amount of courses available, a high pagination publication was required. To maximise the amount of pages we could print up together on a large B1 sheet, a finished size was chosen of 240 x 170mm. This also ensured a minimal amount of paper wastage. The cover was cleverly designed to be simple but impactful. It contained large pink text sporting spot UV varnish, whilst the remainder of the cover text was created using white foil blocking.

Environmentally friendly 'cellogreen' matt laminate protects the block colour on the covers that encase the substantial 160pp text. The finished result is a modern, sleek PUR bound publication that showcases all that the University of Derby has to offer. Great thought was also given to the fulfilment and mailing of the prospectus to potential new students.

Environmentally friendly

The striking front cover design was replicated in print onto the outer board mailing wraps which gives a great uniformity to the overall project. The printed board mailing wraps are FSC certified and 100% recyclable which is a far more environmentally friendly option than utilising single use polythene bags or wrap.

Working with sustainable initiatives in reducing plastic waste is further supported by the University of Derby in their local area. The University work alongside Rolls-Royce and the Derby & Sandiacre Canal Trust to help tackle plastic pollution in local Derbyshire canals. The introduction of a waterfront in Derby is seen as vital to the success of the city’s regeneration, as well as preserving and extending green spaces across the city and the surrounding area.

Bristol print supplier

University of Bristol

University of Bristol print supplier

With a former chancellor none other than Sir Winston Churchill and a history that can be traced back to 1595, the University of Bristol has a long and illustrious past. Now a member of the Russell Group of research-led British universities, it is renowned for its medical and engineering subjects and offers over 200 undergraduate courses. Belmont Press have worked with the University of Bristol for over a decade and were delighted to retain the contract this year for the organisations printed prospectus.

The University of Bristol has won numerous awards for its sustainability actions, aiding the city to become the UK's first with certified European Green status in 2015.

Sustainability

With this in mind, the paper used to produce the prospectus had to be a good fit with the university’s sustainability values. Belmont Press therefore sourced paper from suppliers that support the World Land Trust’s environmental initiatives around the UK.

The carbon was offset for the paper used in the production of the prospectus, which qualified the publication to display the World Land Trust logo. Belmont Press also further contributed to the sustainability of the project by printing cardboard environmentally friendly wraps to mail out the prospectus. The wrap replaced the previous single use plastic poly bags as a greener alternative. The card used for the wrap was also FSC certified and 100% recyclable.

The end result

The partnership of the University of Bristol and Belmont Press has resulted in the sustainable production of a striking 80 page Undergraduate Prospectus, finished in the handy size of 210 x 210mm.

It is held within our 12,880 cubic meter, temperature controlled warehouse and fulfilled by our own dedicated staff. Tomorrow’s students receive a unique, quality publication that is carefully produced, keeping a greener, more sustainable future in mind.

Exeter College

Exeter College

Belmont Press have a long-standing relationship with Exeter College and have successfully produced their flagship course guide for the past three years. In September 2021, Exeter College’s design team presented us with an exciting new project which was to be printed using a different neon colour for each course guide over the next three years, with the theme being 'Your future is bright'.

Neon colours often require two hits, (or passes), to achieve the required colour density and vibrancy. Applying the ink twice creates full ink saturation and avoids any inconsistencies of ink coverage across the printed surface. With this in mind, we chose to produce the School Leavers Course Guide 4pp Covers as a sheet-worked project (i.e. two passes) through our Heidelberg Speedmaster XL75 lithographic press. It was important to the design team that the neon ink on the Covers of the publication appeared luminous and gave a striking visual impact.

The dedicated account manager assigned to Exeter College assessed the remainder of the artwork and assured the college design team one pass of the neon pink would suffice throughout the inner text as it was used minimally within the content copy.

Customer service

This decision meant it was possible to ‘perfect’ the 164pp text which was more cost-effective. ‘Perfecting’ is the process of printing both sides of the sheet at the same time in one pass. Additionally, this decreased the drying time required and reduced the risk of ink set-off when folding the text sections.

Within 10 working days from approval to print, 15,500 copies of the publication were completed and ready for delivery. We facilitated the fulfilment and roll-out mailing of over 6,500 copies for direct distribution to prospective new students. A further bulk delivery went directly to the college, with the remainder entering our temperature-controlled warehouse as finished goods stock. This was to be fulfilled and mailed on request by our dedicated mailing team.

There are unique challenges associated with the application of neon inks. Our expert team are experienced in producing projects with neon colours, ensuring the highest possible intensity, uniformity, and quality is achieved. The design team at Exeter College were delighted with the finished results of the School Leavers Course Guide. The publication successfully delivered the impactful appearance that was desired, within budget, and meeting the required distribution schedule.

Lithographic print partnership

The marketing team at Exeter College had this to say about their experience of working with Belmont Press.

"We were very happy with Belmont Press's customer service. The communication was clear and quick. Where there were any concerns about print finish (we wanted to achieve a neon finish on the cover which was not straightforward to do) these were communicated clearly on videocalls with us and potential resolutions were discussed and trialed quickly to ensure that the finish and quality would be as we wanted."

The team concluded "The actual sign off process was one of the smoothest we have had to date and all went to plan, in time for the print deadline. We have been happy with the quality of the print and the special finish too. It is exactly what we had hoped to achieve and the bright colours have received excellent feedback."

"On price, print quality and customer service Belmont Press have been very good and we are already planning our next print product with them."

University of Exeter

University of Exeter Alumni Magazine

The University of Exeter publish an annual magazine, known as Exeter Magazine, which is sent to all alumni and supporters of the University. The publication has a mailing circulation of 53,000 copies and consists of the main magazine and a letterhead, which is then personalised, fulfilled into a printed envelope and mailed out to 41,000 UK addresses, with the remaining 5,000+ copies being mailed out internationally.

In 2019 Belmont Press took part in an Invitation to Tender for, and were subsequently awarded the contract to print, Exeter Magazine. The publication is A4 in size and consists of 52 PUR bound pages. We retained the contract to print our second edition in May 2020.

Potential pitfalls of the mailing

  • The University required an outer cover which made an impact, specifically soft touch laminate.
  • Lamination can be seen as not environmentally friendly.
  • Eco / green laminate options can be price prohibitive.
  • Lamination requires an extra machine make-ready which can impact delivery schedule.
  • Some of the University data was known to be obsolete.
  • The address on the envelope needed to be matched with the corresponding letterhead.
  • The drop deadline was a no fail date.
  • A priority postage was required which, including the VAT, can be costly.

The solution

Belmont Press put forward our Sapphire soft touch in-line coating as a solution in place of lamination.

  • The coating is applied on the press, in-line with the printing.
  • It does not require a second machine process.
  • It is completely recyclable and is more cost effective than lamination.

Our mailing solutions facilitated the following:

  • Undertaking a full data cleanse prior to processing.
  • Camera-matching the carrier sheet and envelope to ensure they corresponded.

The result was a success. The magazine cover had the tactile feel that the University of Exeter required and all magazines were printed, fulfilled and mailed out on time and on budget.

Manchester Metropolitan University

MMU undergraduate prospectus printing

Manchester Metropolitan University is The Sunday Times University of the Year for Student Retention 2021. It hosts over 33,000 UK and International students. In December 2020, Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) went out for formal review of their 2021/22 Undergraduate Prospectus printing contract.

A key component of the Invitation to Tender (ITT) was the supplier's ability to offer a market-leading print and fulfilment service supported by an in-house IT team. MMU required their chosen print partner to print and bind their prospectus, fulfil and mail it out in an eco cardboard wrap. The University team also required a bespoke Application Programming Interface (API) to integrate within MMU's own system, fetch student prospectus request data and report back on stock usage figures automatically.

The solution

Once Belmont Press were awarded the contract, we immediately assigned a dedicated Account Management team to MMU. The team consisted of one internal Senior Account Manager, one Manchester based Project Manager a web developer and our IT Manager. The team worked with the University and together set out key mile stone dates to ensure a smooth transition from MMU's current fulfilment partner, while our IT specialists designed a powerful, branded, online Management Information Systems (MIS).

The MIS enabled MMU staff to monitor and order goods we hold on their behalf. It provided regular pre-agreed reports at intervals to suit MMU's Student Recruitment team so they could monitor their UG Prospectus request conversion rate. All the information was harvested via a bespoke API, designed specifically to integrate within the MMU system.

The result

As a value-added service the Belmont print team applied an antimicrobial coating to the prospectus. The coating, which prevents 99.9% of bacteria from living on it, is completely transparent and didn't detract from the finished article.

In summary the production of the Manchester Metropolitan Undergraduate Prospectus was managed with the following objectives achieved:-

  • A full printing, finishing, fulfilment, mailing and distribution service was provided.
  • Full stock and mailing reporting was made available via secure log in.
  • The prospectus was mailed out in a fully recyclable environmentally friendly printed wrap.
  • Antimicrobial coating was used to finish off the prospectus.

After a successful delivery of the 2022 prospectus, MMU extended the contract for our team to produce the 2022/23 publication.

Catalogue printing

Industville

Industville catalogue printing

Industville are a London based manufacturer of hand-crafted, high quality, industrial style lights and furniture. They market themselves to high-end restaurants, wine bars and retail clients as well as the general public.

Their product is premium, made from high quality materials, so when it comes to their flagship marketing brochure, the quality of the catalogue printing must reflect the product it’s selling.

The cover needed to be printed as a solid block, using Industville’s brand Pantone 431 grey ink. To finish off the completed PUR bound catalogue, the outer cover was soft touch laminated and a copper foil block needed to be applied. This finish would provide the luxury feel that Industville required. After a successful tender submission, Belmont Press was chosen as Industville’s key partner for the project. While our pricing was competitive, the driving factor behind the decision was the proven quality of our work along with the vast printing fire power we had at our disposal.

The pitfalls and solution

6,000 catalogues were required in total and the delivery date was a 'no fail' deadline. This was for an important exhibition taking place on 26th April 2019. Industville were also up against a ticking clock - hundreds of images needed to be inserted into the artwork before they could send it on for printing. In actual terms this meant that over 3 million A4 sheets of paper needed to pass through press, be bound together and special finishes applied within a 10 day period. This was from receipt of artwork on 15th April. Brand integrity was also extremely important to Industville. Their grey particularly has to be on point.

While artworking was still ongoing we provided a print test, illustrating the brand solid grey. We printed a ‘double hit’ of the Pantone colour to create a lovely smooth solid finish. Their key photography was also used within the print test, so the marketing team were safe in the knowledge the chosen paper provided exactly the right results. We then implemented a colour standard on the grey and programmed it into our presses. This meant we knew colour consistency would be achieved once the final artwork was made available.

The result

In order to take the pressure off of the Industville team, we requested artwork for the cover ahead of schedule. This allowed the design team to focus on the text, while Belmont printed and applied the special finishes to the covers. Upon receipt of the remaining text artwork, we immediately ascertained how many finished books were required for the exhibition. This enabled us to prioritise a smaller quantity of key, advanced catalogues to meet the no fail delivery.

The end result is a striking 30mm thick, PUR bound premium catalogue. We distributed all 6,000 publications on time and on budget, to the quality that the brand demanded. The copper foil blocking on the front is given a platform by the smooth soft touch laminate. The solid grey underneath and Industville’s lovely portfolio of imagery is given justice by our high definition printing.

In May 2021 we were once again delighted to be invited to produce main catalogue and updated price list.

London 2012

London 2012

With over a decade having passed since London 2012, we look back fondly, and with pride, at the part we played in helping to deliver a successful Olympic Games. In 2010 Belmont Press took part in the formal tendering process to be awarded a place on the official print partners framework. After an in-depth review, we were successful in our bid to provide the games with a brochure printing service as well as event guides, ticketing guides, large format items and signage.

Midway through 2011 LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games) started to produce literature in preparation for games commencement in June 2012. While the requirements started off at a slow pace, Belmont were quickly established as LOCOG's favoured 'go to' partner for the vast majority of their printing requirements.

Brochure printing

One of the largest and most important print projects that LOCOG required was the London 2012 Official Ticketing Guide. This A4 4-colour 64pp publication (plus 4pp cover) allowed the public to understand the ticketing process and order tickets via post. It was the first major visible publication of the Games, and over 2.6 million copies of the guides were printed and distributed all around the country.

Once we had printed the guide we quickly invested in a second HP Indigo digital press in preparation for the surge in requirements going in to 2012. The year kicked off with two more major projects: -

For every ticket bought at the Games, a spectator guide to the relevant sport was required. This A3 publication, folded to DL size, provided information about the event and venue. There were 63 variants, each one referring to a different Olympic or Paralympic sport.

Olympic legacy

Additionally, all tickets were to be delivered in a bespoke ticket wallet, totaling nearly 2 million copies, all of which were printed and finished in-house at Belmont Press. The ticket wallet was the first branded item that each spectator saw when receiving their tickets, so they needed to be of the highest quality.

During a 12 month peak period for London 2012, Belmont Press worked on over 650 different projects with LOCOG, many of which came with a 24 – 48 hour no fail deadline.

Our lithographic brochure printing and digital print offering to the Olympic Games was, along with the games itself, a huge success and remains a project that we are exceptionally proud to have been a part of.

Print on demand

A-Z Maps

A-Z Maps

The Geographers’ A to Z Map Company Limited is the largest independent map publishing company in the UK, producing iconic products such as the London A-Z and many award-winning maps. The business started in 1936 as The Geographers’ Map Company Limited and now produces over 320 mapping products in lithographic print as well as print on demand.

In common with many other book publishers, A to Z moved a proportion of its print to China some years ago. There were two main reasons for this; firstly, to reduce cost and secondly, due to the use of more durable sewn binding for the same cost as perfect binding. However, it has since moved this work back to the UK, with some being placed with Belmont Press. A to Z came across Belmont Press as both companies were suppliers to the London 2012 Olympic Games. A to Z then selected Belmont to produce some of its standard map books, which were litho printed and bound.

Certifications

Belmont Press had to meet strict criteria to supply to the London 2012 Olympic Games, and The Production Manager at A to Z was impressed by Belmont’s environmental and quality certifications.

He also examined the set-up and ethos of the business, commenting: We don’t like to change suppliers very often, so we try to be thorough and look at every aspect of supply. We’ve had our fingers burnt in the past and don’t choose purely on price, but quality and delivery as well.

“Belmont Press ticked all the boxes – the quality has been excellent and they are very competitively priced for the print that we need. They are also very nice people to deal with!”.

Print on demand

Aside from our lithographic work with A-Z, we have also helped develop an online ordering and digital printing service for its large format maps. With demand for some of their product lines having reduced, A-Z required a service that provided copies of their maps via a print on demand service. This helped reduce wastage and ensured A-Z's spend matched the revenue generated by customer orders.

Belmont's system is integrated within the A-Z website. It receives customer orders automatically, sends print on demand requests to our digital press and posts direct to A-Z's clients. The process is a seamless one and all publications are printed and despatched within three working days from order.

The company designs and manufactures all of its products in Northamptonshire and every item is the work of skilled craftsmen. Haddonstone designs feature on many prestigious properties including hotels and stately homes, as well as private homes and gardens of every size and style. The Haddonstone printed catalogues needed to reflect the high quality of the products they contain.

They are an important sales tool for private clients and also serve as a reference manual for architects and designers. The catalogue is full colour, outsize A4 with 216 printed pages that are thread-sewn. It needs to be robust and able to withstand the rigours of having pages photocopied without coming apart over its two to three year life cycle.

Quality printed catalogues

Belmont Press has been producing the Haddonstone lithographically printed catalogues since 2012, and Marketing Director Simon Scott said the decision to choose Belmont Press as their print partner was based on the three key factors of price, quality and service.

He added: "Ideally, we wanted to work with a local company, but I also compared prices from companies across the UK and internationally. Belmont Press is very competitive, the local support is excellent and our account manager is very knowledgeable about print."

Simon continued "He responds to our requests quickly and understands what we are trying to achieve. Belmont Press provides a seamless service. Their attention to detail is good and they always do what they say they will do. They're also flexible and accommodating when our schedules change."

Printed brochures

FRANKE

FRANKE

Franke is a high-end brand of kitchen systems with a focus on high quality manufacturing and stylish design. Selling through kitchen design studios, Franke’s brochure range is aimed at both consumers and the trade and is a key part of its marketing strategy. The company produces three major printed brochures for different product ranges each year, comprising 48 or 76 pages. They are required for the KBB exhibition, so the deadline is fixed. It’s a complex project featuring hundreds of products, photographs and drawings.

The Marketing Operations Manager at Franke had this to say about the service they received from the Belmont team:

Quality printed brochures

“Our range of printed brochures are our largest print project by some margin and a significant part of our budget. We needed a commercial printer who could deliver the quality we required, had the capacity to produce all three brochures at the same time to meet our deadline and was competitively priced. Belmont met these requirements, and they’re very easy to work with...We always need some flexibility as the artwork is often delayed due to the complexity of the project. We deal primarily with a sales person at Belmont, who is very professional, but it’s clear that each department has a different responsibility and that they manage the whole process very well.”

Quick and easy proofing

"We receive a level of service from Belmont that we haven't had from other commercial printers, and the small things make a big difference to us. We get the proofs back almost straight away and they have already been checked and marked up by the Repro team at Belmont. For example, checking that page numbers correspond with references on other pages. This is a great help, as someone viewing the brochures for the first time will spot things that you might not notice when you've read them dozens of times. We never compromise on quality, but price is an important factor, and Belmont Press delivered an excellent brochure printing service at a very competitive price."

Regents University

Regents University, London

Regent’s University London is a highly respected and internationally diverse independent university. Its focus is on professionalism, internationalism and the development of its students as global citizens, offering both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. After a competitive tender process, Belmont Press was awarded the contract due to our high quality lithographic print, as well as other key factors: -

  • Proven experience within the Educational Sector.
  • The provision of a 1,500 pallet storage facility.
  • A focus on providing excellent customer service.

High quality lithographic print and customer service

Sarah Jackson, Publications Manager in the External Relations Department at Regent’s University London, said:

“I found Belmont’s sales person, Joe Billingham, really helpful and easy to get on with. He’s very responsive and will come in and discuss any print projects or queries that I have.”
“He’s very knowledgeable, as well as being supportive and seeing things from the customer’s point of view. He’s happy to make suggestions on how best to achieve what we need and nothing is too much trouble.”

Rebranding project

Belmont Press retained the contract after Regents gained University status. This involved a comprehensive rebrand, which we were delighted to be involved with. Following the rebrand, the university team had this to say about our services:

'The service we receive from Belmont Press is excellent and there have been no problems at all. The account management team are always adaptable, responding very well to last-minute changes. They are easy to work with, helpful and efficient and have always delivered on time. The quality of their digital, large format and lithographic print is second to none'
